867,000 Australians were working in more than one job in the December quarter
The number of Australians working in more than one job has reached a record high. The recent rise in the number of workers in multiple jobs is a direct result of the lack of full-time employment, and the pandemic of insecure gig work. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, a record number of 867,000 people were working in more than one job in the December quarter of 2018. The fastest-growing sectors were health care and social assistance, education and training, and administrative and support services.
The rise of multiple jobs has created many challenges, including the need for flexibility. The cost of living is squeezing the budgets of many households. Ms Hawker works two or three days a week as a disability support worker. She recently took on some extra work at an after-school care centre. Meanwhile, her husband, Mr Hawker, works as a relief teacher and a casual farm hand. Earlier this year, he had quit his shearing job after developing a shoulder injury.
Occupational ceilings
There is no single occupation where you can meet the Occupational Ceilings. Each occupation ceiling only represents the maximum number of visa places that can be obtained in that occupation in a given financial year. These ceilings do not apply to employer-sponsored visas or state-nominated visas. In any given financial year, there are 160000 places for skilled occupations, and the remaining are for family visas.
The number of places for each occupation is limited and will vary according to the skilled migration list. The government has set an occupation ceiling for each group. These ceilings were introduced to provide a balanced migration program and to ensure that skilled migrants are not overrepresented in a particular occupation group. The ceiling values are calculated based on stock employment figures and are provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. This policy does not apply to State or Territory Nominated or Business Innovation and Investment visa subclasses.
Vacancy activity
The ABS released its latest Vacancy Activity in Australia report today. The report reveals an optimistic outlook for regional Australia, as well as structural problems that limit employment opportunities. Data from the Regional Australia Institute reveals that there are 84,600 regional job vacancies in April 2022, a 24.8% increase on April 2022, largely due to an increase in professional roles in the health sector. The report also notes that job vacancies in the region have been increasing at a faster rate than in other regions.
Although Australian businesses have been negatively affected by the omicron virus, the illness has not had a significant impact on hiring trends. Since the new year, the postings in smaller states, particularly Queensland and South Australia, have surged. Queensland postings are 111% higher than pre-pandemic levels. The two states accounted for ninety percent of the increase in overall postings in the nation. Vacancy activity in Australia 2022 is projected to remain elevated.
Skills required to secure high-paying jobs
The Australian government has announced a list of critical skills needed by migrants for the construction, IT, and medical industries. With the new list, people with these skills can fast-track their visa application and get an exemption from travel restrictions. This list is a significant step forward for the country, as it removed one of the biggest obstacles for migrant workers during the recent coronavirus epidemic. The skills required to secure high-paying jobs in the future include certifications and a background in various trades. For example, you can become a metal machinist, a sheet metal worker, a welder, or a metal fabricator. Depending on the state, the demand for specific specializations may differ. Engineers are still in high demand, whether mechanical, industrial, electrical, or computer. Agricultural workers are also in high demand, both permanent and temporary. They’re needed to carry out tasks that are largely mundane.
